Dr. Matt hew E. Nelson With nearly 20 years of experience, Dr. Matthew E. Nelson has built Southtown Dental Care around one goal: making dental visits more comfortable. He has owned and operated his Scottsdale practice for more than 17 years and has been named a Top Cosmetic and General Dentist by his peers in Phoenix Magazine for 10 consecutive years. S O U T H TO W N D E N TA L C A R E · S C OT T S D A L E AZF: How did you end up in the Valley? We could choose anywhere in the country, and we chose here for the sunshine and opportunity. We live in Paradise Valley and love the con- venience, restaurants and events. I’ll never get tired of seeing the sun refl ect off Camelback Mountain. AZF: If you picked one quote to live by, what would it be? “Don’t get bitter, get better.” AZF: Why did you become a dentist? I was born into a dental family; five people in my immediate family have attended dental school. What drew me to dentistry was the chance to change how people feel about something that’s genuinely stressful and to curate a specific experience for my patients. AZF: What motivates you in your work each day? Being better: staying current on techniques, investing in technology and keeping a stable, long-tenured team. Dental practices are being bought by large corporations, and patients feel it — the personal touch goes away. I see an opportunity to stand out with our team and experience. Recent advances include 3D printing, AI technology for X-rays and the elimination of those miserable, gooey impressions. AZF: What is your favorite thing to do in dentistry? Treating patients with dental anxiety and helping them overcome it. We’ve built the practice around making that easier—massaging chairs, noise-reducing headphones and, most significantly, oral sedation. AZF: What is oral sedation dentistry? Patients take medication before the appointment, arrive relaxed and drowsy, and we can often complete years of postponed treatment in one visit. We provide comprehensive dentistry—cleanings, veneers, cosmetic bonding, crowns, implants and Invisalign—in-house. AZF: What is most important to optimize oral health? Consistency: Use an electric toothbrush twice a day for two minutes, floss daily, have regular dental cleanings, wear a custom-fitted night guard and minimize processed sugars. AZF trendsetters
